The Ultimate N82 Battery

For those N82 users who insist that the given Nokia battery provides poor performance, this battery may be what you're looking for...

It's a 2000mAh BP-6MT Lithium-ion Battery (as opposed to Nokia's 1050mAh BP-6MT), which basically means it's roughly twice as durable as the Nokia one. Notice that it's also physically twice the size of the Nokia one - meaning that if you feel that your Nokia N82 is already very thick, you probably shouldn't get this, or people will start to wonder what you have hidden in your pockets...

It's going for US$9.99 from Hong Kong, and to be honest I'm not exactly sure whether this battery is reliable or not; although I'm tempted to purchase this since it's going for a rather cheap price, and to do a complete review on the battery unit.

Oh, and if you do intend to get it, a word of warning - if you're doing any firmware updates, you MUST place your original Nokia battery in your N82 before conducting them. This is because the upgrade checks for the battery, and if it's not the official Nokia one, the update will terminate, screwing up your phone. Don't say I didn't warn you...

World's first mobile phone with built in projector

This whole idea has been talked about alot and it has actually been made into a reality by a Chinese company named CKING. It was showcased just recently at the IMIE2008 which took place in China. Three Nokia handsets leaked – two N-Series, and the 5800 Tube

Nokia's 5800 Tube was seen some months ago, now, it makes another appearance, along with the N85, and the N79. The N79 looks to come in two colors – titanium or white, and bears a resemblance to Nokia's N82, except it doesn't sport the fingernail-style keys of the N82. The screen looks to be about standard for an N-Series device – 2.4”.

Next, the N85, which has the dual-slide form-factor of the N95/6. It comes with a five megapixel camera, much like the N95/6, but with the addition of an Xenon flash. It also dumps the Nokia N96'S stand, in favor of a lens cover. It should be available in your choice of black or white.

The 5800 Tube, a mostly all-touchscreen device, with a few buttons on the face of the device. It looks not to have a finger-driven UI, but rather stylus input, given the picture below. It will be the first Nokia to use their S60 Touch UI. The camera is a 3.2MP affair, with a dual LED flash. No word yet on when any of these three devices will be announced.

Review of GSM/UMTS-smartphone Nokia 6210 Navigator

Impressions
Call quality was never an issue with the 6210 Navigator, as it easily lived up to our expectations of a Nokia-branded phone. Ring tones sounded quite loud thanks to the handset’s dual speakers. Surprisingly, we found the 6210’s vibro alert to be very shrill.

The 6210 Navigator is set to land this August with the price tag of 300 Euro, which includes a pre-pair license for pedestrian and in-car navigation (accounts for 50 Euros or so). Obviously, the maker gets it at a lower rate.

How does the 6210 fare as a portable Navigator? Quite well – it has no crucial failings, but it’s no different from the rest of S60-powered devices either (bar the on-screen compass, which is a quite useless trinket that will keep you entertained for 5-10 minutes at best). Will Nokia be able to sell it in droves and bring it into the mainstream? For this to happen a lot of things have to click in and align the right fashion, plus it will do only for some specific markets, where navigation-savvy handsets are all the rage, and the 6210 will look appropriate in terms of price-quality (again we stumble upon the all-in-one device dilemma). However it won’t work out on most market (including CIS countries), since there is still only a very thin layer of people who do realize what navigation is all about; the truth is, this market isn’t mature enough. Meanwhile those few savvy users will rather prefer top-of-the-line NSeries solutions or the upcoming ESeries devices. At the end of the day there is no way-out for the 6210 Navigator – while this phone aims at the mainstream, there is just no market for it to flourish on. The interesting thing, though, is that it’s exactly the same story as what we witnessed with the Nokia 6110 Navigator, basically the same hurdles killed the sales of Nokia’s first navigation-centric solution. It seems as if the manufacturer is waiting for the market to explode and come to love smartphones of this breed, so that they’ll happen to have an affordable mass-market device on offer at the right time. As far as my opinion goes, I see no compelling argument for buying the Nokia 6210 Navigator right now. It doesn’t differ from older offerings in terms of navigations, for they can be upgraded with the latest version of Nokia maps too, and sure loses to the maker’s latest and greatest FP2-equipped handsets.

Review of GSM/UMTS-handset Sony Ericsson C702

Mobile-review have posted their review of the Sony Ericsson C702 Cyber-shot. Here is their final impression.

Impressions
Our C702 unit was loud enough to break our preconceptions about muffled sound of ruggedized handsets. The phone’s vibra alert turned out to be average strength-wise, though. The reception quality of the C702 was quite good – we got strong signal levels in most places and didn’t notice any significant differences from other contemporary solutions.

The C702 is set to arrive this June at a price of 320 Euro. It has no standout features or treats barring the casing design; as for the camera, it’s actually nothing new, since the Sony Ericsson K770 packed in pretty much the same unit. The C702 is a fairly good choice if you are in the market for a handset that is a fraction more protected from dust and abuse than most other mass-market solutions. Also going for this phone is its lens cover and flashlight mode for the camera. But, the bottom line is this: the C702 has no bells and whistles as far as its camera department is concerned, it even can’t stand up to last year’s flagship, the Sony Ericsson K790/K800. It’s a well-rounded and versatile device aimed at a small-numbered audience bent on ruggedized phones. The C702 is robust enough to survive a few tumbles and resist water and mud, but of course it doesn’t have the level of protection to spend a minute in water and take no damage. On the other hand, Sony Ericsson isn’t charging the maximum for it, on the contrary, the C702 is relatively affordable for this device type, especially for want of real competition. While it boasts a nearly perfect build quality, its plastic quality and materials let it down. Some will come across the problem of worn-out keys, some won’t; the good news is that the manufacturer has promised to sort this out, but considering the shape of the C702’s buttons and their size, we have some doubts that Sony Ericsson will be able to improve their coating significantly. Also among the C702’s failings is its display that gets washed out in the sun.

On balance, the C702 has a likable design, mediocre specs and its price tag is 25 percent heftier than that of its non-ruggedized counterpart. All this indicates that Sony Ericsson is into niche-aimed solutions and puts a lot of effort into diving the market into narrow segments. As of today it has no rival out and about, so all fans of the late Siemens M-series can well thrown the C702 onto their short-lists, given its similar degree of protection, prowess in basic functions and some extra contemporary feats under the hood (camera, music, GPS).

Sony Ericsson Paris – the story of one affordable device

Mobile-review have posted a very interesting article about the Sony Ericsson Paris. Here are the final paragraphs from the article.

The Paris looks more like Sony Ericsson’s attempt to settle down in the segment of touchscreen devices before Motorola or Nokia make it there. In my opinion, this is a niche-aimed solution that is not like the G900 (which has all what it takes to turn into a widely adopted device). The Sony Ericsson Paris will be sort of a late call and too few will really crave for its QWERTY keyboard. It’s pretty difficult to find a scenario where its sales numbers will be stellar. UIQ-based devices will see an all-round new platform only towards the end of Q2 2009, when the maker will switch to new models with upgraded and enhanced specs, and as for today, Sony Ericsson is trying to get the maximum out of its old solutions and platforms. And the fact is, they have already approached the upper limit there, when it's no longer possible to take their ideas in the top segment any further in view of insufficient computing power and performance.

Opera Mini Web Browser Is A Great Alternative

If you haven't already tried out Opera Mini you need to give it a shot. It's a great alternative to the built in Web application. Pages load fast and the layout is perfect. I've seen a few website rendered wrong with the Web application, and Opera Mini can handle it perfectly.

Today they released Opera Mini 4.1 which doubles the speed of previous versions. I hadn't used Opera Mini in a really long time because it wasn't fast enough and I was always more than happy with the built in Web application. But after giving this latest release I try I am extremely impressed and can honestly say Opera Mini will probably be used more than Web. The speed is amazing and there are just so many more features to this application. One of my favorites being the ability to scroll down pages fast and smoothly instead of click by click like the Web application.

A few tips.
Keep the settings on portrait. Rotating the N82 will also rotate the screen and it works perfectly. If you get sick of the application asking you which access point to use you can fix this. Go into your Application Manager and select Opera Mini. Click options and Access Points. Set your Network Access to Always Aloud.

Keep in mind this is a Java application which means it can be used on just about any phone. I'm usually not fond of java applications because they tend to run slow and not as smooth as native .sis applications, but Opera Mini is an exception.

The Samsung Glyde was one of the most hyped phones on an American carrier in recent memory leading up to its launch, and there's one small problem with that: it's hard to live up to the fanfare, no matter how good (or bad) the phone might be. A common early complaint coming out of the gate seems to be the lack of support for Verizon's MediaFLO-based VCAST TV service, a service that the Glyde's main competition, the Voyager, supports. The UI's also getting panned for being a little more confusing that it needs to be; compounding matters is the fact that Phone Scoop describes it as a "push UI" on account of a fiddly touchscreen. For what it's worth, it seems that the keyboard is at least quite good -- so if you can put up with the negatives, the Glyde might still have a place in your pocket. Otherwise, the Voyager's still looking awfully good, isn't it?

You'll never believe this, but it looks like Cupertino might be getting ready to drop a bomb this summer -- a 3G bomb, in fact! The latest beta release of firmware 2.0 for the iPhone has apparently revealed a preference screen that allows users of the new model to disable the 3G radio and fall back to GPRS / EDGE because the faster service "decreases battery life." Gotta pay to play, as they say. The ability to disable 3G service in favor of improved standby performance is a pretty common one in modern phones, so we're not surprised to see it here -- just a little disappointed that Apple hasn't incorporated enough fairy dust to magically make the problem go away.

Sony Ericsson has opened a new flagship store in Taiwan with the grand opening on the 10th of May. There will be a grand ceremony complete with SE branded merchandise including bikes and towels. The store has the usual white SE look like other stores around the world. Outside surrounding the store is all Sony Ericsson, with big signs and ads. I think the shop looks great and I would love to visit it. What I found particularly interesting is that sign that explains the prefixes. P is listed which could mean that there will still be devices with the P index (successor to P990?). The P stands for PRO (I think it used to stand for PDA). There is also a new F index for a new "fun" line that is yet to be announced. Enjoy the pics.

Mobile-review have posted their review of the Sony Ericsson Z770. Here is the final impression.

Impressions
The Z770i’s ring tones volume was never an issue – its speaker fared well in most environments. The reception quality was nothing to complain about either. Our only gripe is with the phone’s vibro alert, which occasionally proves to be on the weak side.

The handset is set to debut this April around the 480-550 USD price point (300 Euro in Europe) – for this money the user gets an interesting design, all standard features of A200 with a couple of minor fresh touches. It is not the most decent price/quality ratio we have seen – its design certainly adds some weight to the price tag. I suppose the looks are the Sony Ericsson Z770i’s major trump, some will definitely like it.

As far its rivals go, the Z770i will find its main competition in the Nokia 6600 that sports exactly the same specs and will arrive in May (while its announcement is scheduled for April). It is also notable for its fashion-savvy design and exactly the same price tag (300 Euro).

That Air France in-flight calling trial is now well underway, and it looks like there's still some kinks left to iron out. The New York Times hitched a ride on a recent flight featuring tests of the system, and found that things weren't quite working up to snuff: voice quality was said to be like "talking to a small robot," only six passengers could get a signal at a time, Blackberry email didn't work, and calls placed from the ground to cell phones in the air went straight to voicemail. That's a pretty long list for a system that's been talked about for a couple years now -- let's hope OnAir manages to clear up some of these glitches before angry passengers revolt over not only having to listen to other people's conversations, but also their screaming over bad connections.

A Chinese phone website has published some side by side comparison photos of the Nokia N82 in black and titanium. It's amazing how both of the phones look great. I initially thought I would be leaning towards liking the black version better, but now I am not so sure. The titanium is really unique and like others have said I would've liked to see the N82 black in more of a matte finish rather than glossy.

I'm curious to see how many of you prefer the titanium or black.

Nokia's touchscreen Tube out in the wilds?

Like detective work? Good, this one's for you. That's the supposed first picture of Nokia's Tube which we've enhanced a bit to see all the detail. According to Symbian-Freak, the device code-named "Tube" will be Nokia's first touch S60 device but will not be a flagship phone. Another higher spec'd phone will ship "shortly after." The display is said to be between 3- and 3.5-inches with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a camera (with another up front based on the picture) which they say is "way better" than the iPhone's but not on par with the existing N-series shooters. The phone is said to ride atop quad-band GSM/EDGE, UMTS/HSDPA radios with built-in Bluetooth, WiFi, uPnP support and a stylus. Something you'll apparently need judging by that skinny scroll bar. GPS? Yup, that too. No multi-touch on this model but it is said to provide haptic feedback in a package supposedly smaller (maybe a little bit wider) than the N73. We also notice an "XpressMedia" label on the phone which would indicate an affiliation with Nokia's XpressMusic class of media devices. You'll also notice that the icons have been slightly revised since we went hands on with the S60 Touch UI back in February. Real deal or not, it's a mystery worthy of your skills.

Have You Upgraded Your N82 Firmware Yet To v20.0.062? Tips For Upgrading...

Well its finally here. The new Nokia N82 firmware. I've been seeing reports all over the internet of people starting up their PC Suite and Nokia Software Updater and downloading the newest firmware, version 20.0.062.

Tips before you upgrade:

- Even with the User Data Preservation feature of the N82 that keeps all your applications, settings, calendar entries, email accounts, etc. - Still backup your phone before updating. Use the backup tool in pc suite and backup all your important stuff. You never know when something can go wrong.

- Make sure you have a secure and fast internet connection. Make sure your connections are plugged in good.

- Set your phone on a flat surface like a desk or table. Don't put the data cable where a dog or person will hit the cable and disturb the update process. You can brick your phone like this then your in a mess of trouble.

- When your update says that its finished the phone might look off like its dead. Leave it alone for 5-15 minutes sometimes it takes awhile to boot up. Eventually it should boot up on its own after the update.

- Make sure your battery is fully charged before the update.

- I personally try not have anything running in the background on the computer and disable the screensaver just to ensure nothing goes wrong.

I also checked out a post today by Devin from The Nokia Guide which talks about the Nokia N82 black being available and in stock at PhoneSourceUSA. Click here to check out the article and keep in mind Devin found out buyers outside of the USA can get the phone shipped internationally. Warning: Make sure you call that retailer first I've heard all their N82's are the asian version with asian markings on the keypad above the each number.

N-Gage Now Available In Full For the Nokia N82

I just got wind from an email that the N-Gage application is now available for the Nokia N82 and N95. Not sure if this brings the full version or not as I'm on my way out the door I don't have time to test it out.

If someone would like to test it out you can head to the N-Gage download page and come back to let us know if it works as the full version and not just a trial. Sorry if its just a trial like I said I haven't personally tried it out.

Nokia's N810 Internet Tablet WiMAX Edition gets official

Right on cue, Nokia's WiMAX-enabled N810 Internet Tablet has surfaced at CTIA 2008, and yep, this critter is destined to go on sale here in the US of A this summer. Beyond that, you'll notice the familiar 4.13-inch touchscreen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard and even a built-in webcam for video calls, Mozilla-powered browser, integrated GPS / media player, 2GB of internal memory and a microSD expansion slot. Heck, Nokia even touts this thing's ability to "access the Internet over WiFi or via conventional cellular data networks by pairing to a compatible mobile phone via Bluetooth technology." Also announced today is the freshly updated OS2008, which includes an enhanced e-mail client, support for Chinese character rendering in the browser and RSS feeds and "Seamless Software Update functionality" to boot. Hands-on with the Motorola Z9 for AT&T

So who exactly green-lighted the "mahogany" shade used on the AT&T V9 and Z9, anyway? We don't like it any more now than we did when we saw it on the RAZR 2, but the phone itself looks like a solid choice for anyone seeking a decent midrange slider -- especially if Samsung and LG aren't to your liking. We were pleasantly surprised by how thin the phone looks and feels (the press shots seem to betray it there for some reason), and the screen is one of the better we've seen in a device in this class, both for size and clarity. Throw in a little AT&T Navigator action, Video Share support, and HSDPA, and you have yourself a complete little package -- if you're into those sorts of things, anyway!

Cellphones are dangerous/not dangerous, you're better off smoking edition

You've heard just how dangerous holding that cellphone upside your noggin is, but this time, the research is really for real. Reportedly, an award-winning cancer expert (Dr. Vini Khurana) has concluded that mobile phones -- in the long run -- could end up killing far more Earthlings than smoking or asbestos ever could. As we've heard countless times before, this fellow is warning that heavy mobile users could end up with brain tumors that threaten their livelihood, and feels that a direct link between handset use and certain tumors will be "definitively proven" in the next decade. Additionally, he suggests that individuals avoid using the cancer generators whenever possible, and that governments and the mobile industry at large take "immediate steps" to reduce radiation exposure. You won't be laughing if he's right.

A Quick Comparison - N82 vs. N95 Camera Different Besides The Flash?

I just came across this post over at Symbian In Motion comparing the Nokia N95's picture quality to the Nokia N82. We all know that the flash on the N82 blows the N95's out of the water.

But how about normal lighting without flash? What about photos in a dimly lit room with no flash. Is there a difference?

Here is a chandelier with the light on in a dark room. Both photos are taken in night mode with no flash. Photos taken by Zach from Symbian In Motion.

As you can see there is a huge difference. The N82's picture lets in the perfect amount of light so that it's able to grab the details of the chandelier. The N95 failed miserably. As Zach points out in his post, this has to do with the imaging software in the N82 being better than the N95's. What else would explain this? They have the same megapixels and same lens right? Nokia N95 owners should be happy about this because more than likely since is software this can be fixed with future updates.

Sony's PIX brings full-length films to AT&T Mobile TV

Sony just revealed a bit more about AT&T's Mobile TV service launching in May. We now know that one of the two exclusive AT&T channels will be called PIX, Sony's new feature film channel for cellphones. The service is a first of its kind in the US... for good reason. Oh, it's not that we have anything against the roster of films including "Ghostbusters," "Philadelphia" and "Karate Kid." It's more the prospect of sitting in front of that tiny mobile screen to watch a full-length film without the ability to pause, fast forward or rewind. This is live broadcast folks. Nevertheless, Sony Pictures claims to understand the risk. According to Eric Berger, VP Mobile Entertainment at Sony Pictures Televsion, "We recognize that people are on the go with their mobile phone and coming and going. This isn't for people looking to view a movie for the first time. It's OK to miss the beginning." Films will run on PIX for a month with new additions added weekly.

They haven't revealed anything we didn't already know, but AT&T's finally come out with a semi-firm date for the launch of its MediaFLO-powered mobile TV service which will be branded simply as "AT&T Mobile TV." It'll be available to subscribers in May -- no specific date just yet -- on two exclusive handsets, the Prada-esque LG Vu and the more pedestrian Samsung Access; the Vu features an expansive touchscreen and 2 megapixel camera, while the Access makes do with a smaller landscape display and a 1.3 megapixel sensor. Both feature Bluetooth and 3G data, but the real story here is Mobile TV itself, which will come with two new channels that are exclusive to AT&T (in other words, unavailable on the other live MediaFLO service, VCAST TV from Verizon). Impressions
The reception quality put up by the L320 is in line with other Samsung-branded devices. The ringtone volume is quite decent, as it can be heard in various environments. The silent alert is average strength-wise, no significant improvements have been made here.

Going for the L320 are its supreme battery time and a neat design. The cues it has taken from the Samsung E570 are not all that screaming, so it makes a nice change from bog-standard designs available for feminine phones. However, the L320 has quite a list of competitors employing similar concepts in design, these are the Motorola ROKR U9 and the Sony Ericsson Z750i (in a way). Both outdo the Samsung’s offspring in the feature department, yet go for pretty much the same money.

Samsung is banking on impulse-driven purchases, assuming that women who could go for the L320 are not savvy about functionality or technological talents of their phones like dated resolution, old player application and dated platform. The same approach was exercised with the original La’Fleur collection, where it worked out nicely, allowing those models to sell in substantial quantities. That’s why we are quite confident saying that the Samsung L320 will garner some following, although it doesn’t stand a good chance to close in on the Samsung E570’s numbers. Its price tag of 350-400 USD will put many off, since it doesn’t have the punch to take the owner’s breath away and that’s what the L320’s problem is.

This handset’s fate will also be affected by whether Samsung will launch the L420 (the third La’Fleur collection is already finished) or not, as it boasts a similar design, touch-sensitive player controls and updated software, the same as what comes inside other Samsung-branded solutions. All up, as soon as the L420 arrives, the Samsung L320 will kiss its career on the market goodbye. That’s how we come to an obvious conclusion that the L420 won’t debut or at all or will come out when it won’t pose any threat to today’s solutions, meaning that once again we will have another phone that will look already long in the tooth on its release day, compared to Samsung’s own products. Somewhat bizarre approach, but it looks like it has worked out for Samsung.

HTC's Dream again rumored to be first Android phone

We've been hearing about the HTC Dream (likely not pictured above) for what seems like an eternity on a tech timeline. Now "a person close to the situation" tells InfoWorld that the Dream is indeed HTC's Android phone. Remember, HTC is widely expected to be the first from the gate with a retail phone featuring Google's open source OS. The Dream is said to measure 3-inches wide by 5-inches long and feature a full QWERTY keypad that "either slides out or swivels." Right, exactly what Forbes told us 5 months ago. Still, it's always a good sign when the rumor mongers align. Whatever happens, we certainly expect the first Android phone to be exceptionally spec'd as a showcase of the OS' power and possibilities to come.

N-Gage First Access Ending for S60 devices

According to the developers of the N-Gage platform, the First Access program is ending on the 27th of March. Although you can still play games in the application, it will no longer be officially supported, so do take heed. Here's a couple of notes to remind you:

Player Names and Passwords will not be valid for the official release of N-Gage
Game licenses for purchased games will be valid for commercial release, but you will need to upgrade to the new N-Gage and reinstall the game again
All saved games and N-Gage points will be wiped for a "fresh start for everyone"

No words on when the final release will be available, but it's probably out in a "few weeks".

By the way, Nokia is also offering a free game for N-Gage, Mile High Pinball, as well as 1000 community points if you complete their survey, so why not do it now?

Hacking the N-Gage First Access for the Nokia N82

As you may recall from my previous blog post a few days ago, N-Gage First Access (Public Beta) has been released exclusively for the Nokia N81. Well I don't like things released exclusively for one model - in particular, considering that the N82 is the flagship product along with the N95, and has even more functions than the N81, shouldn't us users get a chance to participate in this public beta?

I managed to find a method to install this new public beta on this Chinese forum - it's working fine for me, so I'm happy to share it with you guys.

First off, download this archive file. It contains the N-Gage application that you're going to need to run your games. Install Pips. sis (if it hasn't been installed yet) and NGageInstaller.sis. You should numerous prompts for multiple components needing installation when you install NGageInstaller. Just keep clicking next until it installs. And it doesn't really matter where you install it, it still runs either from the Phone memory or your Memory stick.

After your installation, you should notice that the N-Gage application is missing from your main menu. It's now located in the "Applications" Folder under the main menu. The logo should be coloured blue now instead of the orange you've seen for the past months. Beats me why they've changed the colour...

Now the easy part. You've gotten N-Gage installed; the only thing missing is the games. Download this second package which includes the first 3 games offered from the Nokia website (since the app is in beta, all the games are only trial versions). All you need to do now is to connect your N82 in USB Mass Storage Device status (or take the memory stick out and connect it via the card reader) and drag all the downloaded games (which are conveniently in the n-gage file format) in to X:\n-gage.

Now disconnect the cable, boot up N-Gage, wait for it to lag a bit before the app starts, and you're there. The last step is to install the game in to your system - notice that all the game titles are slightly transparent. Scroll to the game you want to start and click on the middle button; it prompts the user for installation. Once that is done, click again on the game title and start gaming away!
